Dear Parents / Carers
Learning this week Nursery children have been discovering all the amazing things our hands can do! In Reception the children have been making ‘All About Me’ shields and learning their first sounds. Children in year 1 have been measuring the length of their arms to investigate whether taller children have longer arms! Learning about the different continents has been one of the topics this week in year 2. Year 3 children have been using high and low movements in gym and thinking about how villagers would respond if they saw a dragon! Year 4 children have been investigating ‘plus and minus 10’ – looking for patterns. They have also been writing character descriptions for ‘Beowulf the Viking’. Year 5 children have been discovering in science how to separate soluble and insoluble materials. Designing rockets and using art tints and shades have been some of the topics in year 6 this week.

Free School Meals. If you think your child may be entitled to receive free schools meals please either come to the school office or go to www.bristol.gov.uk/fsm to apply. It is very important that anyone who is entitled applies for free school meals as the school receives extra funding towards the children’s education. All information that you provide is, of course, confidential. Please remember that even if you apply for free school meals your child does not have to have school dinners – you can continue to provide them with a packed lunch if you wish. This includes Reception, year 1 and year 2 children (even though they get a free lunch!)
Attendance: Look out for the latest attendance figures on our website:-
KS1 reading meetings - Thanks to all who came to the meetings on Wednesday and Thursday this week, they were well attended. All year 1 parents/carers will receive a reading and phonics information pack next week.
Applying for a place at a secondary school If your child is in year 6 you must apply for a secondary school place before 31 October 2014. Bristol City Council prefers that you apply online at www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions. If you need help please contact Mr Williams, our Family Link Worker.
Applying for a place at a primary school If you have a child who was born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011 you must apply for a reception place before 15 January 2015. Bristol City Council prefers that you apply online at www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions. Please remember that even if your child attends our Nursery you must still complete an application. Again, Mr Williams will be happy to help you.
Art Exhibition and Workshops Saturday 4 Oct 10.30-4.00 Thanks to those people who have offered to help on Saturday 4th Oct when we are opening as part of the Art on the Hill arts trail. If anyone else can spare an hour between 11.00-4.00, please get in touch.
If the weather is fine, we will be running a Big Draw workshop when we hope to create a huge collaborative artwork using natural materials on the playground. To do this we need your help to collect any of the following: autumn leaves, sunflower heads, seed heads, conkers, rose hips, hydrangea flowers, crab apples, pine cones, old man's beard, hawthorn, winged seeds, marrows, pumpkins, windfalls of apples, etc. On Thursday 2nd Oct and Friday 3rd Oct we will be on the top playground before and after school to collect the materials from you. We also need camping/patio folding tables, vintage style cake-stands, china plates, cups and saucers but no valuables.
Please let us know if you can help in any way by texting DB on 0773 1484723 or emailing: email@example.com
PTFA News:- There will be a social get-together at Mrs. Browns Cafe in Victoria Park this Monday (29th) from 9am. Come along after drop off for a cuppa and a chance to catch up with other parents. Everyone welcome. If it is raining we will re-locate to Windmill Hill City Farm cafe. Congratulations to Emily Johnson from 6 Silver Birch, who has won the sunflower challenge! Fiona will be popping into your class to present you with your prize next week. Don't forget, it's our Art On The Hill Art Exhibition & Workshop Day on Sat 4th Oct, 10.30am-4pm in the school playground. We could still do with a few more volunteers to look after the art exhibitions for an hour. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org, if you can help. We would also LOVE donations of cakes for our Tea Room. Please bring cakes to school on Friday 3rd, or to school playground on Sat 4th from 9am onwards.
