Dear Parents / Carers

Learning this week Nursery children have been learning about the Indian festival of Divali and have been making Diva pots, a Toran which is a door decoration and a welcome mat for their class room.  Reception children have also been learning about Divali and making Diva pots.  They also watched a puppet show about Rama and Sita.  Year 1 children have been learning the differences between fiction and non-fiction books and have been writing about themselves.  Children in year 2 received a single shoe in the post and have been trying to find the owner – they started their T4W story ‘Cinderella’!  Year 3 children have been looking for minibeasts and found a skeleton of a ‘bog’ body. They will be investigating to solve the mystery.  In literacy, year 4 children have been writing their own rhyming poems and in numeracy they have been learning to divide by 10’s,100’s and 1000’s.  Maritime Bristol has been one of the topics of learning for year 5 children and in numeracy they have been learning about the powers of 10.  Year 6 children have been studying famous Bristol landmarks and looking at postcards of the city.

Applying for a place at a primary school If you have a child who was born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011 you must apply for a reception place before 15 January 2015.  Bristol City Council prefers that you apply online at www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions.  Please remember that even if your child attends our Nursery you must still complete an application.  Our Family Link Worker, Mr Williams will be happy to help you.

Smarties Thank you to everyone who has already sent in their Smartie tube.  Remember tubes don’t need to be in until Fri 28 November so you still have 3 weeks left.  The children are coming home with the latest ‘Child of Hope’ newsletter today so you can see how the school is developing.  In the newsletter there is information about sponsoring a child at the school – please talk to me if you would like to know more about this.  Thank you once again for all your support. – Miss Swift

Children In Need Friday 14 November.  The theme this year is ‘Heroes’.  The children can pay 50p and dress up as a superhero, someone they see as a hero or invent their own superhero.

Park Information Lighting in park – A parent has raised concern that the path between Windmill Close and St Luke’s Road has no lighting – I have written to the person in charge of parks about this.

Park keeper - I have met the person in charge of parks in South Bristol to express my concern about the possibility that we will lose our Park Keeper Ray. You too can make your feelings known to the council about the park keeper and lighting by doing the park survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/groundsmain

Windmill Close and Graffiti The council is supposed to clean the road every week.  Every week the school complains when it hasn’t been done.  On Wednesday I had to contact the City Director, and later that day the road and pavement were cleared of leaves. Every week we report graffiti to the Council, they are supposed to come and clear it away quickly.  Obviously this is not working at the moment.  We will keep going.

If you wish to tell the Council about street cleaning or graffiti you can report it here http://www.bristol.gov.uk/page/bins-recycling-and-street-cleaning/street-care-and-cleaning

Calling all single parents Do you end up feeling different? Isolated? Not quite a ‘proper’ family? Would you like to do something to feel more empowered and less ‘different’?

Myself  (a single parent),  and St Mary Redcliffe’s Family Link Worker, Chris Williams, are setting up a single parents’ group, to meet chat, socialise, listen to guest speakers and maybe do something creative – write our stories? Make a mural? Any ideas welcome! If you are not a single parent now but have been in the past, we would still love you to come along and share your experience. Our first meeting will be at the School House on Monday 17th November at 9.15am and every Monday after that in term time.  It would be lovely to meet you all, just come along on Monday the 17th for tea, cake and a natter. Contact Chris Williams on 0117 3534760 for further details.   Claire Berry (parent)

Reminders  Please do not let you children climb on the banks and walls in school, especially at the front of the school.

Choir and Netball afterschool clubs have been cancelled on Tues 11 Nov as there is staff training at that time.
