Term 1

Week beginning 20.10.14

Well done Lime Class for finishing your first term of reception! You have all made lots of progress this term and should be really proud of yourselves. I'm proud of you too!

Thanks to those of you who were able to come to our first curriculum afternoon it was lovely to see so many children proudly showing their learning diaries and sharing our hedgehog actvity. Don't worry if you weren't able to come this time, there will be plenty more opportubities next term. Feel free to look at your child's learning diary at any time - they will also be available to look through during Parent / Carer evenings next term.

Here are some pictures of the curriculum afternoon along with other learning that has taken place this week. The highlight of this week was meeting author / illustrator Mark P. Robertson, who came to share his stories and artwork with the school. We went to an assembly that he lead in the hall and he visited our class to read his most popular book 'The Egg'. In response to this we painted some dragons and also made dragons out of construction materials (some of these in pictures below)

Have a great break Lime Class (but remember to keep up the wonderful work you have been doing with reading and learning key words)

Have fun

Mr Hewett

Week beginning 13th October 2014

Have just got back from first Forest School trip - very successul thanks to all the volunteers who came to support - much appreciated! Felt great to be back at the site and looking forward to returning again next week. Please check out the pictures below. We have also been learning our 'Talk for Writing' story, 'The Little Red Hen'. The children have been learning he story off-by-heart from the pictures on our story map. I have attached the story map to the useful documents section so your child can tell it to you at home from the pictures. Please also find a video of the songs for each of our sounds in phonics. The sound songs are in the order we have been learning them in. So far we are up to 'r'.

Enjoy the weekend

Take care - Mr H

Week beginning 06.10.14

Eid Mubarak (Happy Eid). This week we celebrated Eid Al Ahda in Lime class by looking at videos and photographs from around the world, making cards and dressing in our celebration clothes for the day on Thursday. Thank you to everyone for your support with this and for coming to the celebration in the hall. Lime class looked brilliant in their special clothes and the necklaces we made from pasta - see photos below.

We attended our first two whole school assemblies - the first was an introduction to Black History Month, where we learned about the story of the British classical composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. We have been listening to some of his soothing violin concertos whilst taking the register! The second was an Eid celebration assembly.

As part of our 'All About Me' topic we have been looking at differences and similarities between children all over the world. This clip from BBC's 'Little Human Planet' was particularly popular last week, so we built a jungle home in the outdoor play area. Have a look here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0115393 or search for 'Houses from around the world' in BBC class clips.

In maths this week we practised spotting tricky teen numbers and we worked in small groups getting a given number of objects from a tray, remembering to stop at our target number. We learnt about the importance of really checking our counting to make sure we haven't made any mistakes.

In literacy we learnt the sounds g o c and k

Week beginning 29.10.14

This week we have continued to learn more about our simalrities and differences as part of our 'All About Me' topic. We read a great book about hair from around the world and we have put some pictures of the backs of our heads on our display board. See if you can guess who is who! Write dance was fun as always (see pictures below). We also practised writing more letters and numbers on mini white boards and learnt some new songs to go with our new sounds. I have attached a sheet to support handwriting to the useful documents section.

We had fun mixing autumnal colours in art and exlored printing with leaves conkers and pine cones. We also used these resources in maths, helping Ms Squirrel to smatch written numbers to groups of objects she stored them for the winter.

Week commencing 22.09.14

We have just finished a super week of learning and we managed to fill our learning behaviour reward chart with all 30 number cookies. As a result, the children choose a treat of having some extra time on the pirate ship and their first go at using the traversing (climbing) wall. Having completed a second week, we are now much quicker at following class routines which has given us more time to play and learn. We practised number writing in maths and we learnt to recognise our first 4 sounds in phonics (s a t and p). We have also practised making different types of pattern during 'Write Dance' such as zig-zags and waves. We have been reading some interesting books about our similarities and differences and we made 'All about me' shields where we drew pictures of ourselves, our homes, our families and interests. We have also finished painting all of our self-portraits and can't wait to get them displayed to show you!

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.

15.9.14

Congratulations to Lime class on completing their first week of school! Although I am sure the children will be really tired tonight, they have made fantastic progress this week in following and getting used to our school routines. We have begun our literacy sessions by practising our listening skills and predicting rhyming words in poems. In maths we have practisied writing numbers on whiteboards and matching groups of objects to numbers. The children have also started painting their self portraits. So far we have painted our heads and shoulders - next week we will be painting our eyes, noses and mouths by looking really carefully in a mirror and using a thin paintbrush. The children had their second session with coach Josh, who was really impressed with them again!

I thought I would ask the children what they thought they had learnt this week - here's what they said!

"I have been learning about how to read some of the books, I just said what the pictures looked like."

"I like putting on my name (feelings board) I'm feeling happy."

"I've learned about lots of maths and reading words - at home I read sixteen words with mummy all by myself."

"I learned how to turn a torch off and on." (Playing with UV torch in dark den)

"This week I have been doing counting."

Enjoy your weekend

See you all on Monday.

Week Beginning 08.09.14

Welcome to Lime Class. The children have had a fantastic first week and have worked really hard in getting to grips with new routines, new faces and even a fire drill! This week we have been exploring the different learning areas in our classroom and playing in the outdoor areas. Lime class really enjoyed their first PE session with Coach Josh and showed off their fantastic listening skills. We also went on a guided tour of the school to meet the office staff and see some of the other classrooms in the school. We have also stayed for lunch two times now! Have a great weekend and before I forget, thank you all so much for your hospitality last week during home visits. Mrs Clarke and I had a lovely time getting to know you and your children.
