Week Beginning 12th October
This week in art we have been listening to music and drawing what we feel while we listen. We even got to dance to it as well!
Maths was exciting this week because we were doing two step problems. Some of us found it a bit tricky but we are all a little bit more confident now!
We continued to learn our talk for writing text about a dragon called the Jorvic Ridgeback and in independent write we wrote our own report about our own dragons. We came up with some imaginative names and features for example The Seaweed Dragon, Egendor, The Flappy Pengualapous.
Our behaviour system has a new colour for when we are amazing!!!!
In PE we had mats and we had to create a routine where the first and last shape had to be the same.
Week Beginning 5th October
On the 6th October it was Viking Day for the year fours. In our topic we have been learning about why we speak English and the Vikings have up so we had a Viking day. We all dressed up as Vikings and some of us had fur and warm cloth like the Vikings used to have. We cooked a Viking recipe for oat cakes, they were really yummy! We also made our own Viking shields made out of cardboard.
This week year four also had a strange, uninvited visitor who absolutely trashed the place!!!! He/she smashed the window, he left burnt marks on pieces of paper, he ripped pieces of paper, he knocked chairs and tables over, brought in leaves and mud and much more! This only happened in the top building in the year four classrooms and corridor. We think it might have been a Viking and a dragon!
In Science this week we planned our experiments and then carried them out and we found out that it works way better if it is dark. We were exploring how to make light travel around a corner. We learnt that light travels in a straight line and that light reflects from mirrors.
At the end of the week we went on a trip. We rowed a blue boat up and down the river just like the Vikings! Group 1 and group 2 had a race to see who could row back the fastest and group 1 won by ten seconds.
On Monday we had an assembly all about conkers from 'the great outdoor learning team' and the whole school was given a conker at some point during the week. We all went to the playground and we all played conkers with a partner.
Week beginning 28th September
Maths was amazing because we were using column subtraction which was exciting. Sometimes if we had a tricky number to subtract we had to exchange. We did some work in partners and had to solve the problems together. We have also been focusing on our six times table and we are already SO much better!
This week in PE we have been practicing balancing. We played a game where you had to stop and do a balance position every time the whistle blew. We are also doing netball and working on our foot work.
In Music we were listening to Viking music and we even got to make up some of our own words to go with the music. We have also been getting together in a group to compose very loud and strong noises meanwhile someone had to keep the beat with the drums.
In Topic we have been learning about how the English language has developed and we created a time line of the major events. We have been looking at the Vikings, The Romans, The Anglo Saxons, Celts, The Normans and 2015.
We have been focusing on persuasive language in Literacy and we have been planning a piece of writing for next week.
We have been creating self portraits in Art this week.
Week Beginning 21st September
In Literacy we have been writing in the first person. We were writing character descriptions and dairy entries.
Maths was exciting this week because we were exploring multiples of 6 and the six times table and finding patterns. We are already getting better at the six times table. Also we were learning about Roman numerals.
In Art we have been writing our names in English and then in Runes (Viking Writing).
In PE we have been making the shapes of letters with lower case or upper case. We had to get into threes and work together to make the letters. We also played a game called cars and bikes.
Science was also brilliant because we learnt all about light and shadows. Did you know if there is no light in a room then you won't be able to see anything. If there is any light coming in then you can see. Amazingly, shadows are made by things blocking light getting through.
Week Beginning 14th September
This week we had a few birthdays, some of us are now nine!!
This week in Literacy we have been acting out how to train your dragon. We were learning how to write a set of instructions and we used time adverbials, imperative verbs, bullet points and sub-headings.
In maths we have been learning column addition and carrying. It was tricky but most of us got there in the end!
In art we have been sketching roman artefacts. We also drew a centurion helmet.
In music we have been making a Viking morning noises and turning them into compositions.
Did you know that when there is absolutely no light you can’t see in the dark!!!!
In Netball we have been learning how to pivot when catching the ball.
Our first week and two days of school so far!
We have started our exciting new topic which is the question 'Why do we speak English?'. We were exploring roman artefacts that Julian brought in. One of the artefacts was a bath scraper, this was for the servant to scrape off any hair from their bodies when they went to the baths. Also Julian brought in a replica of a Roman Helmet and it was really heavy! It was a centurion helmet.
In Literacy we have been reading 'How to train your dragon' and we have been writing about the appearance and personality of the main character Hiccup.
In Science we have been learning about light, this week we were looking at sources of light. We made posters to categorise light sources.
In Maths we have been thinking about numbers and in one lesson we had to make a number in as many ways as possible.
When we did PE, we did netball and gymnastics.
