Term 1

Welcome Back Cherry Class!

I hope that you all had a wonderful summer holiday and you’re ready to start the new school year as year 5s. You have a brilliant year ahead of you filled with lots of new learning and exciting opportunities!

We have lots of great activities planned for you already! This is the first year of our new curriculum topics. Please take a look at our Curriculum Overview attached below to see what we have in store for the year. If there are any areas that you feel that you have some expertise in, and you may be able to help out with, please let me know. We are always happy to have the support from parents with our learning at SMRP.

As you will see, next term we are planning to get some guest speakers from the local community to come in and discuss their career journeys. If this is something that you are willing to do, please let me know as I am starting to plan this now.

This term our topic theme is 'Giving Back'. It is a charity based topic where we'll be investigating the work done by Save the Children. The aim is for the children to raise money for these charities.

In addition to our topic work, we'll be reading ‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’ by Elizabeth Laird. This is a brilliant book that we will be basing our English learning around. In Maths, we are kicking off the year with place value, including ordering and comparing numbers to 1,000,000, negative numbers and Roman numerals. Every day, there will be an emphasis on learning spelling patterns and rules. The key spelling words for the term can be found on this page for you to practice with your child. These words have been selected from the book that we are focusing on.

Furthermore, we are investigating materials in science as well as starting our Ukulele lessons. If your child has a ukulele that they would like to bring in for these sessions, please put them in a case or bag with their full name and class written on.

In PE, we will be doing dance and Akeel will be teaching the children cricket. This term, PE is on a Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child is sent to school with the appropriate P.E. kit. We advise that PE kits should be in school all week, taking them home to be washed at the weekends. This is so that if there are any extra lessons where a PE kit is needed, we won’t have any issues where children have to borrow kit or can’t take part.

Please continue to practice time tables at home and create opportunities to read and discuss books together. We are aiming for every child to be reading for 20 minutes every day!

I hope that you all have an amazing year. If you have any questions or queries, then please don't hesitate to come and speak to me or any of the year 5 team.

Miss Aubrey
