Term 2

Calling all Secret Agents!

We have started off term 2 with a bang! Cherry class have been cracking codes, solving mysteries and pushing their fitness levels to the limit with an assault course. This was all in aid of becoming a spy just like Alex Rider, who is the main character in our class text this term – Alex Rider’s Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz.

This is an adventure story so we will be focusing on this genre with a particular focus on developing a balance of description, dialogue and action within a story.

Cherry class thought about the skills and qualities that they have for being a secret agent and wrote a CV to apply for the job. This helped us kick start our topic this term: ‘What life skills do we need to achieve our aspirations?’

Throughout the term we will be looking at different careers and paths people take to achieve their aspirations in life. Hopefully, some of our guest speakers will inspire them!

We would like to invite as many of you to come in and discuss your careers with the children as possible so please let me know if this is possible. They will gain loads of insight and inspiration from it!

In Maths this term, we are moving on from statistics and looking at multiplication and division (multiples, factors, prime, squared and cubed numbers). We will then begin to look at perimeter and area.

Cherry are continuing to learn how to play the ukulele each week with our music teacher James and we have a fantastic opportunity to learn gymnastics in PE with Bristol Sport coaches.

Please note that PE days are now on a Tuesday and Thursday. As always though, I recommend for PE kits to be in school on a Monday and go home on a Friday in case there are any changes to the timetables.

At home, it would be great if you can make sure that the children are spending quality time reading. You could ask them questions about their books using the question stem book marks handed out at parents evening. Below you will find this term’s spelling focus document. If you have time, you could practise these. Additionally, number bonds, doubling and halving and times table facts will really help across many other areas of maths.

As always, if you have anything you would like to discuss, catch any one of the Year 5 team at the end of the school day, or leave a note at the gates, and we can arrange a suitable time to speak.

Keep up the hard work Cherry!

Miss Aubrey
