Year 3 Hazel
3 Hazel and Miss Stone would like to thank all the parents and carers for all their help and support this year!
We have had such a great time and learnt so much and enjoyed our class trips!
We are looking forward to a lovely summer and seeing you all in Year 4.
Yesterday Year 3 visited Windmill Hill City Farm and made flatbreads and Brazilian Feijoada it was delicious! We were lucky because we were the only year group to have a professional chef called Glyn Owen. When we were in the garden we were allowed to eat different fruits, vegetables and flowers. The garden was full of interesting bugs and insects. At plot Number 12 we stopped and looked at the school allotment, Layla and Logan gave us a guided tour. It was a really fun day and we got to take home our food in a cardboard box we could recycle.

In maths we have been doing fractions and measuring objects in lengths, width, perimeter and areas and today we went outside to the playground and we measured the stage, play pod and the whole playground it was fun
Yesterday was Art on the Hill for SMRP. We designed and sketched ideas in our sketch books and created our own dinosaur mosiacs uisng coloured paper. We had a choice of drawing 3 dinosaurs. In the afternoon half the class drew cartoon characters and half finished off their mosiacs. We made our dinoasuar out of cardboard boxes and newspaper. In small groups we worked with Joey's mum and Ben's mum. It was a fun day!!!
24.06.15 Art on the Hill
In 3 Hazel we have been learning our Talk For Writing Story 'Abdi and Samira'. It is a journey story and the children visit 3 different places. We changed one of the places when we wrote our own stories.
Every Day we have been watching the Women's World Cup on BBc i Player. We got to watch one of the best mathes of the tournament Sweden 3 Nigeria 3.
In Art we have been designing Mosiacs using squared paper and felt tips. We drew cars, boats and Minecraft people.
Teacher Mike from Child of Hope is visiting us from Uganda.
We have just got back in from Sports Day. A massive well done to all sprinters who took part and of course, to everyone who took part in the events. Yellow team did particularly well and took the trophy. A great way to end our first week back.
In Literacy we have been learning our new story, Abdi and Samira, which is a journey story. We have been learning how to use paragraphs for major changes in subject and time. We have also been describing a set of different locations for our future journey stories.
In Maths, we have been inverse operations to solve missing number problems for all the operations. We have also been using money to help us explore decimal points as well as record our work in pounds and pence.
In Art we have begun drawing our Niki de St Phalle version of the Bristol Dinosaur which we are hoping to turn into a real sculpture!
In 3 Hazel we had great fun at Bristol Zoo. We put on our hi vis jackets and we got on the coach. When we arrived we saw the enthusiastic lions and visited Twilight World and we were very quiet. Also we saw some bats that were scary and had large, sharp claws. We spotted a silver back gorilla that was massive!! He looked a bit grumpy. Around the Zoo there were many animaltronic creatures that moved and one squirted water at us. Miss Stone gave us a sticker and voucher from the munching mini beasts workshop. It was an amazing day!!
This week we have been making STOP MOTION movies. We created our scene using cardboard boxes, coloured paper, glitter, glitter pens, fabric, tissue paper, feathers, cotton wool, straws, string, coloured card, seleotape, masking tape, glue, scissors, pens and pencils. Then we made the characters and chose pictures from the computer.
Each group had a camera and took lots of photographs. When we put it in a programme called 'Movie Maker' it made a movie. We added music from a website and added it to our movie. It was fun!!
We are looking to showing you are movies next Tuesday.
Coach Josh has been teaching us tennis skills like hitting and striking the ball to eachother. We have been playing every week to try and get better.
This week we had an election. We seperated into teams and we had to come up with ideas of how to spend 300 pounds. On Tuesday we listened to peoples speeches. Yesterday we voted. Today Miss Payne announced the results. Team Toucan were the winners. They are going to help us eat our lunches outside, with a radio and have more astro turf rather than concrete.
On Tuesday it was our last swimming session. We had loads of fun and have learnt loads about swimming!
Unfortunately on Wednesday we could not do Sports Day because it was too wet and raining but it is going to be next Wednesday as long as the weather is ok. We already know our colours teams and we are ready.
We cut out parts of flowers and had to concentrate to make sure we labelled them correctly. We have also been learning about the life cycle of a plant.
In topic we are going to make STOP MOTION based on a food chain. In PE we have been focussing on our forehand technique in tennis.
Our writing this week has been about understanding characters and their feelings in different parts of the story.
Parts of Flower
This week in 3 Hazel we have been continuing with writing instructions. Mrs Miller visited 3 Hazel today with baby April. She clapped her hands and smiled at everyone because she liked us. Baby April is really cute!!
In Science we have been setting up experiments to test what seeds need to grow. We think they need water, sunlight, warmth, air and room. We will keep you up to date with our results.
We listened to a song in Spanish and have been learning lots of new words.
Today in 3 Hazel we have been learning how to write instructions. We wrote a set of instructions explaining how to make a parachute. After we played and wrote instructions about how to play connect four. In Numeracy we have been doing halves and quarters and fifths and tenths of larger numbers. We have chosen our spring show song and we are busy performing and dancing our entry. This week has been really busy but fun.
PS Miss Stone let us choose our own smiley faces!
Today was one of the best swimming lessons ever!! We got to have a 'fun' swim which meant our lifegaurd Illy and Miss. Stone and Mr. Law, got out floats, dive sticks, noodles, water polo nets, balls, sinking hoops, squirty toys and kick floats. We had a blast playing all sorts of fun games. We also dived under water to swim through a hoop and retrieve 'treasure'. It was great but the time went so fast. 3 Hazel can not wait until next time.
Happy holidays to everyone!
Tomorrow is a very exciting day because it is going to be a solar eclipse. Ben Jones told us that a solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth. It may be a bit darker tomorrow morning because of this! We know it is dangerous to look directly into the sun as it will damage our eyes so we are being given a pair of solar glasses to wear to protect our eyes. Parents and carers have been invited into school for this special event. See you on the playground tomorrow!!
Today in school it was Red Nose Day and we made our faces funny! We used face paints, stickers and some people dyed their hair red. In assembly we watched a video and met a girl called Ngosa who lost her mother and father but still has her sister and brother. Sometimes she goes to school but does not have the equipment that she needs. So we are raising money to help her make her life better.
In Numeracy we have been learning column additon and subtraction. We are getting better and better at solving problems using this method. It helps us take away and add big numbers quickly.
We have ended the week with a lovely, fun day.
Red Nose Day
Snow Leopard Play
Year 3 and 4 visited the theatre today! We watched a play called 'Snow Leopard' which was about a boy called Sammy who loved animals, adopted a snow leopard and a dancing dude called Hokey Pokey. Sammy's mum would not let Sammy have a pet because it would make a mess on the carpet. Sammy loved animals so much that when he saw a dog he would run up to it and ask its owner lots of questions. One day Sammy bumped into his scary neighbour and he asked him lots of questions about his dog but his neighbour was nasty and mean and shouted at Sammy. We all pretended to be Sammy's mum by acting like her saying the words in the play. Brad taught us 3 different dance moves. The 'spagetti', the 'tornado' and the 'wind screen wipers'. At the end Brad answered any questions and clarified any mis understandings. It was awesome!

OLA BRAZIL 10-02-15
This week 3 Hazel had a workshop about Brazilian dance run by a lovely lady called Steph. The dance was called capoera and it had slow and fast bits. Some of it was quite tricky! We learnt it in steps and then put it all together at the end. Once we had learnt all of the steps we got to use some props to make the dance even more amazing and had a mini carnival which we showed to Miss Swift and Mrs Loosely. However, just as we were finishing the dance the power went off in the whole school - it was very dramatic indeed! (Miss Stone says that we were all extremely sensible, though). We had a tiring but extremely exciting morning.
Love, 3 Hazel
Ola Brazil workshop
In 3 Hazel we have been examining soils and rocks. We are conducting a Science experiment to try and find out how much water there is in a sample of soil from the School Garden.
On Sumdog we have been improving our characters and many of us have moved up to become chimpanzees. We have been having fun playing lots of games. We can also make friends and play eachother at games. One of our favourite games is Junk Pile because the rabbit smashes through all the stuff!
In swimming we played volleyball in the deep end. The green team won. We were improving our gliding skills and diving down deep to get the dive sticks from the bottom of the swimming pool.
In Spanish this week we have been learning how to say hello and good afternoon. We learnt a song in Spanish to help us to remember the well known greetings. We also learnt the word for boy and girl too!
Using the netbooks we have been researching information about Brazilian rainforests. Some of us are writing about animals that live in the rainforest and some of us are writing about the different rainforest layers.
In Science we have been studying fossils and rocks and we made our own fossils using dinosaurs and play dough. We had fun!
We were learning about 'Brilliant Brazil'. Our task was to re arrange and put back together a jumbled up report. Nearly all the class finished the task. It was really hard because we had to match different pictures to different headings. Some of us found it easy because we spotted clues!
In Science this week we pretended chocolate was igneous, sedimentary and metaporphic rocks. Igneous rocks were represented by Crunchies bars, sedimentary rocks were represented by Pink Wafer biscuits and metamorphic rocks were represented by Curly wurlies'. Mars Bars showed us the plates that the Earth is made of and after that we ate the chocolates! It was fun!
Lantern Making with ACTA
We were making bug lanterns which we could make up or copy from pictures. Before we started them we drew a plan of what we wanted to do. We worked together with a partner and many different materials like see through plastic, plastic bottles, giant pipe cleaners, wooden wings, sharpie pens and sticky back plastic. We had great fun and are looking forward to the Lantren Parade on Saturday 24th January. Hope to see you there!
Lantern Making with ACTA
This week in 3 Hazel we have been getting in the festive spirit! Years 3 and 4 performed our Primary School Christmas Musical to our parents on Tuesday evening. It was awesome!
We have also been making jumbo Christmas cards with glitter, sequins and glitter pens. It was really fun but we got glitter EVERYWHERE! Thankfully, we all helped to tidy up, we did an amazing job.
During I.C.T. this week we have played on sumdog. We have progressed from a rat to a chimpanzee to a narwahl to a harpy eagle to a polar bear to a blue whale!
Today, we are very excited as we are wearing our Christmas jumpers and enjoying Christmas dinner.
Merry Christmas from 3 Hazel, we look forward to seeing you in 2015.
In swimming this week it was our last lesson before we break for Christmas. It was really good fun because we had a 'free swim' and could choose what we did and we had loads of toys like, a volleyball, woggles, floats, water squirters, dive sticks and egg flips.
Today we did a science investigation with marbles. We had a ramp, marble and a target and had to try and hit the marble on the target. We also were testing out different materials like carpet, wood, felt and sandpaper. Earlier in the week we used magnets to attract different magnetic things.
Today we tried to progress in SUMDOG. If you win loads of money you can become different animals. Everyone starts as a rat! Mr Law showed us a programme called coding. We made our own flappy bird game. You may choose a character to play the game.
Our learning this week has involved planning and writing our defeating the monster story! We created our own monsters and it was fun and scary. So far we have written our opening, build up, problem and we are going to finish our stories next week. Prepare to be spooked!!
On Friday we went on the netbooks and opened the search engine 'Google' and looked for SUMDOG. It is a computer game where you can collect coins. You may create your own Avatar by choosing if you are a boy or girl, hair colour, clothes and eyes. We played different games to help us learn our maths skills. Using your coins you may buy clothes, shoes and hats. To play the game you need a password, username and the name of the school. You can choose easy, medium or difficult questions depending on which year group you choose.
In Numeracy we have been finding out about fractions. We drew around shapes, cut them out and folded them in halves, quarters and even tenths!!
It has been a really, really busy week because we have been rehearsing our Christmas Play which we hope you will come and watch and enjoy. Tickets are available from the school office. See you there!!
Our Ancient Egyptian Adventure
Our Amazing Egyptian Adventure!! 24.11.14
Today we had an epic Egyptian workshop. First we met Laura the Explorer who was our guide. She is very good friends with Dora the Explorer! Laura the Explorer had been cursed by King Mentahotep and if she showed signs of the curse we had to say 'King Mentahotep, let her go!'.
We learnt about the River Nile which is over 4000 miles long. It is the longest river in the world. We made the river by holding eachother's shoulders and wiggling. We also stretched our arms out and wiggled our fingers to show what the river Nile delta looks like. We used our bodies to act out palm trees, dead bodies, rowing a boat, hunters, shaduf and pyramids.
Next, we acted out a play which showed the ritual that Egyptians used to bury their dead. We had a priest, casket carriers, a dead body, embalmers, mourners and a couple of Egyptian gods!
The embalmers used a hook to mash up the brains so that it was easier to pull them out of the dead body's nose! (we were only acting though, we didn't really pull someone's brains out!). The body was then wrapped in bandages and put in to a tomb. We learnt that Egyptian's believed that if you were a good person then you would go to the after life, so they buried their loved ones with lots of lovely things so that they had them in the after life. Anubis took the dead person over a river and then a Judge decided if their heart was lighter than a feather. If it was then they could pass over into the after life, if not then they were eaten by a monster.
Here are some words that we have used to sum up our Egyptian experience:
Freaky, scary, gory, breathtaking, fun, dark, funny, amazing, exciting, surprising, hilarious, epic, upsetting, heart taking, fantastic, dead, awesome, jolly.
Yesterday we made buildings out of 12 playing cards and masking tape. We were not allowed to fold or cut the playing cards and we were trying to see who could build the strongest structure. The structure had to stand up by itself. We are going to test the strength of our structures by putting marbles on top and seeing how many marbles our structures can take. This was part of our learning for the greatest buliders.
Who are the greatest builders?
Children in Need
Children in Need
Today we all dressed up as superheroes or we created a new one of our own. We donated 50p to dress up for charity. Everyone was enjoying this special day. Miss Stone dressed up as 'MIchael Recycle', Mr. Jones dressed up as 'Mario' and Miss Pearson dressed up as 'Storm'. Some of us dressed up as Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Pudsey and Anna and Elsa. We also had some fantastic costumes like 'Stampy', 'Evan', 'Captain Boxers', 'Luke Skywalker', ' 'Jake and the NeverLand Pirates', ' Pirate fairy', 'Flash', 'Super Layla, Joey, Nahla and Adelene', 'Cat Woman', 'Cookie man', mum, Fashion hero and Stripey woman.
It was funtastic!
Indian Folk Dance with Archana Mahida
On Wednesday morning 3 Hazel created an Indian folk dance. First of all we did a warm up with stretching and shaking. Next we told the story of a boy and girl who celebrated the rain and could see an animal with an elephant tail in the clouds. We learnt the dance in less than 30 minutes! The music was beautiful and helped us move. We hope you like our photographs.

Thank you for all your support over this term. Enjoy the half term break everyone.
I hope you enjoyed our Edison afternoon and I'm glad so many of you could make it. If you didn't, worry not, the photos for the afternoon are below.
Our topic of Electricity and Magnets has come to an end and the new topic curriculum map and Things You Need to Know letter are attached below.
Have a great break and see you in November!
In 3 Hazel we have been reading our new story 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. It is a really interesting book because the iron man's eyes change colour from blue, white, red, black, purple and green when his feelings and emotions change. In Chapter 4 a scary space bat angel dragon appears and squishes Australia.
We have also created houses for our millionaire 3 Little Pigs and we are looking forward to showing them to our parent's and carer's next week. We have been learning how to swim and dive off the diving board.
@ Bristol Trip
On Tuesday Year 3 went swimming and everybody in 3 Hazel got in the water! We were all feeling very brave to get in the water and it was Saja's first time in the water without arm bands. For some children like Draco, Shreya, Emma and Rayyan it was the first time they went in the water of a swimming pool ever, ever in their lives!!! Everyone at the pool tried their best and Miss Stone was very proud of all of 3 Hazel.
We been having lots and lots of fun on the Windows 8 computers and the school website. On the playground we had a lot of fun because we have a lot of playground equipment, enjoy playing football, making loom bands and the sun is still shining.
Welcome back everyone,
What an exciting start to our school term. Our class are refreshed and relaxed from our summer holidays and ready to learn! We have been getting to know Miss Stone and finding out where things are in our new classroom. We are loving the KS2 playground because we can play with some of our elder brother and siters and loving the monkey bars! We loved making circuits, making bulbs light up and motors go this week and our new science topic is electricity.
Fun with electrical circuits!
We have been having fun trying to make a bulb light up and trying to turn motors. We have been enjoying playing with our friends in the willow walk and playing football and basketball. Our teacher for PE is coach Josh and he has been showing us how to perform gymnastic skills. This week Rahma, Ben, Jeshna, Nahla and Ahmed have been doing interesting show and tell. We also have written some fantastic character descriptions of the wolf from our Talk for Writing Book ' The true story of the 3 little pigs'. The highlight of the week has been using the new netbooks which have windows 8 and you can take the screen off and use it as a tablet. This was cool!!! 3 Hazel.
This week we heve been learning how to set passwords on the netbooks. We had a class discussion about why we use passwords and what data we would need to keep safe. Miss Stone and Mr.Law showed us a website where we could input our password and the computer would check it for us and tell us how secure it was by giving it a score. 1 point meant not very secure and 10 meant really secure. It was intersting and fun. 3 Hazel have invented a great game to play on the playground. It is a bit like off ground touch come and speak to us and we will explain the rules and how to play.
