Year 6 Silver Birch

w.b. 01/06/15

This week we have got right back into the swing of things; full steam ahead for Mini Enterprise! We have budgeted for all the resources we will need, ventured into the High Street and bought almost all the items we require! It was a great experience that showed our excellent team work and numeracy application.

We have also been learning our end of year play 'The Next Big Step.' We appreciate all the hard work with learning lines and practicing songs.

Over the last few weeks Silver Birch have been very busy. We have had SATs, we've learnt invaluable skills at the Bristol Lifeskills Centre and have begun our mini-enterprise topic. See below for a selection of pictures from these activities.

What a huge success our Sports' Morning was! Huge congratulations to all our sprint runners, a fantastic effort. A special mention to the following:

  • Bella who placed second in the Year 6 Girls' Sprint with a gut-gusting run
  • Xander who took a much deserved victory after an explosive start in the Year 6 Boys' Sprint

In our learning we have been solving a grizzly murder in an Italian restaurant; the SPAG Bol cheeky get it? It's about Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar!

Every day we eliminated half our suspects by decoding clues based on correct use of apostrophes, past tense, homophones, commas, nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs!

Very useful indeed.

w.b. 20/04/15

The highlight of our learning this week was a thought-provoking discussion we had regarding questioning. What makes a good question? What would the world be like if we didn't question? Mr Hewett has spearheaded a competition, linked to our core learning skills, which sought to find the school's most interesting question. I am delighted to let the world know that in 6 Silver Birch we had TWO runners up and TWO winners! See their questions below:

Winners:

'What will be the next stage of our evolution?' - Fred

'If God created the world, who created God?' - Zac

Runners up:

'When/ will the universe end?' - Bella

'Why do we dream?' - Kholoud

Well done! Keep asking the questions no-one else thinks of.

In our first week back we, in 6 Silver Birch, have attempted to carry on from where we left off last term. Our reading, writing and maths are a huge focus and as such we are dusting out the cobwebs from one week of camp, and two weeks of holiday!

In our PE topic we have begun learning the skills involved in cricket, and in our Art Mrs H is starting us on learning sewing. Watch this space for proof of our excellent work.

This week in our learning we have:

  • Begun to learn our new Talk 4 Writing literacy topic. The focus has been narrative poetry and the particular poem we have learnt is 'The Lady of Shalott' by Alfred Tennyson.
  • Assessed our progress and understanding of a wide range of numeracy topics through practice SAT papers. This has been a useful learning tool for us!
  • Investigated our school environment and examined different forms of plant life. We have noted the features which allow them to adapt to their environment. Through this we have generated more 'I wonder...' statements.
    • I wonder why some plants' petals are coloured.
    • I wonder why some plants have thorns.
    • I wonder how plants grow in some areas but not others.

Welcome back everyone to our page! We trust you all had a relaxing half term break and have come back refreshed, and reinvigorated ready to face what lies ahead!

This week in our learning we have:

  • Begun our learning on 2D and 3D shapes, specifically identifying their properties, nets and lines of symmetry.
  • As we are currently in Chinese New Year, we have learnt the origin story of the zodiac and have written from the Rat and the Cat's points of view.
  • Continuing the theme of Chinese New Year, our PSHE has been on the theme of 'conflict resolution'. Do you think the Rat, Cat and Ox could ever make peace...?

Below you will see the pictures from the second part of our boating adventure. We collaborated and made some stunning models of The Matthew, John Cabot's ship on which he arrived at the east coast of Canada many years ago. Next week we will be painting the ships with out own design before racing them in the Bristol Harbor Festival this July.

We have definitely had a varied week this week! Lots of exciting experiences, see below for a snapshot.

Monday: We watched an eye-opening play about internet safety. The characters were so great! They really drew us in and educated us at the same time.

Tuesday: We continued our work on the stories we have written for the BBC Radio 2 500 Words competition. We suggest you all have a look at their website and enter.

Wednesday: We went to the Bristol harbor and had a trip around the waterways of our great city. We even saw some shipmakers in action.

Thursday: We used a word processor to write our final drafts of our stories, and also created our own animals in art.

Friday: We published our stories (they're in our book corner for anyone to read) and also created a living, working timeline for our daily activities.

One of the highlights was on Tuesday afternoon when we coached the Year 4 class in their hockey. It was a useful experience as we all became mini-teachers. See below for pictures.

This week we took part in an incredibly immersive day of scientific exploration and investigation. In the morning the children learnt how to dust for fingerprints and footprints, as well as learning the intricacies of each individual print. Ask your children what theirs were!

See below for some amazing pictures of the day we will remember for a very long time.

This week we have done many exciting things. For example, we became architects and engineers as we helped two lovely volunteers from ACTA (a drama and arts company) design and build a pirate ship for the Redcliffe Lantern Parade, which is taking place this Saturday evening.

During this week we also used our investigative skills in an attempt to filter dirty water. Obviously we knew that our water would never be completely clean but the activity gave us an insight into how, throughout history and also currently, access to clean water is not always a given.

w.b. 05/01/15

We have had a wonderful start to the new year in 6 Silver Birch. In our learning we have been focusing primarily on assessing across the core subjects so we can accurately identify our areas for improvement.

Below you will see a range of pictures which show the concentration and observational skills we used when conducting an experiment regarding skittles in water. Our scientific question was;

What happens to the Skittles when we leave them, undisturbed, in water for ten minutes?

From this initial experiment we then questioned what would happen to the Skittles if we changed a variety of other factors.

What happens to the skittles when we add them to the water?

Massive congratulations to everyone for their stunning performances in the Christmas productions. You did us proud! Have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to seeing you all back next year.

w.b. 01/12/14

With only three weeks to go until the Christmas break preparations for our combined Year 5 and 6 pantomime have really taken off. In 6 Silver Birch we spent all of Wednesday making props which included; axes, scythes, rabbit ears, horse-drawn carriage and an (almost) full-sized castle turret! We can't wait for you all to admire our handiwork come to actual performances.

In our numeracy we have enjoyed a week of problem solving activities which follow a story in the form of 'Murder Mystery Maths.' After the grizzly murder of Lady Antoinette, we had to eliminate various, money-grabbing members of her family by solving problems which range from measurement, to measures even telling them time!

In our literacy we have written a letter of complaint to the fictional Mrs Smith who believed children are a nuisance and should do an extra two hours homework a night. We didn't agree; what about you?

w.b. 24/11/14

This week have learnt many different things, such as:

  • How to write a mature, exciting quest story
  • What dwellings and settlements looked like over time
  • What a talented bunch of actors and singers we are! We are definitely enjoying our Christmas play.

w.b. 17/11/14

This week in our learning we have examined many different things. For example:

In our numeracy learning our focus has been shape, space and measure with particular reference to area and perimeter. We have progressed from calculating basic perimeters to real world contexts and making our own shapes based on perimeter e.g. floor plans. When calculating the area we have become much more confident in the method that now we can even investigate areas of shapes in the environment/ compound shapes.

We have reached the end of the innovation stage of our quest story. We have examined all the different characters/ settings in the story and have worked hard to write about the same event from more than one perspective.

This week has been anti-bullying week, a hugely important time in the school calendar. We have used the week to focus on what types of bullying there are, how you recognise them and why they happen. Through thoughtful discussions and activities we are more aware of how to improve the positive, supportive ethos of our school.

This week in 6 Silver Birch we have been getting our teeth into our Talk for Writing story; The Ring Thief. The story, focusing on high quality writing/ showing rather than telling, tells the tale of a young girl named Charlotte returning a stolen ring.

  • Why did she take it?
  • Who is she returning it to?
  • Why is she terrified...?

Our new numeracy groups are beginning our new topic which is all about measurement, area and perimeter. We have self-assessed our independent work on the topic and have acknowledged our areas of strength and development. This is a very useful activity!

Please see the attached pictures that show the children's costumes for Children in Need and some of their excellent paintings; what would YOUR Pudsey look like?

In 6 Silver Birch we have had an absolute whirlwind of a week, and we're not just talking about the weather! Here is just a brief snapshot. We have: begun to learn the details of our new quest story, also we have thoughtfully discussed some powerful issues coming from our topic 'Has there ever been a better time to live?', finally we had a fantastic time designing and making Rangoli patterns to celebrate Diwali.

We hope you enjoy the images of our patterns. We had the most amazing time making them using a coarse coloured sand. There is quite a knack to it and we made Mr Sykes very proud with our work ethic. He was delighted to have the opportunity to say wonderful things about us at our Teacher/ Parent Consultation evenings.

A great week, we hope for another.

w.b. 20/10/14

This term has been much fun; filled with learning, investigation, questioning and most importantly, laughter. Wishing every member of Silver Birch a wonderful and much deserved break!

Welcome to 6 Silver Birch. We are a class full of inquisitive thinkers, hard workers and all round wonderful people. We hope you enjoy our page!

We have been focussing on improving our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages. We are applying our knowledge to real-world contexts, and as a result are able to recall information and solve problems mentally.

In our Literacy we are all completely in love with 'There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom'. It is fantastic! The story of Bradley is one that has drawn us in and got us hooked. Everyone in 6 Silver Birch highly recommends it to all; its wonderful regardless of age!

Our adventure at the National Space Centre in Leicester was brilliant. None of us quite expected to see so many intriguing exhibitions, first-hand accounts of space travel and well...we haven't even started on the planetarium. The experience was inspiring. We learnt all about the life of an astronaut and how you must dedicate yourself to achieve your dreams.

A super week, we hope for another.

w.b. 29/09/14

Welcome to 6 Silver Birch. We are a class full of inquisitive thinkers, hard workers and all round wonderful people. We hope you enjoy our page!

In our literacy we have been learning about our power of reading book, 'There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom'. We love the main character of Bradley because he unlike any other character we have seen before; he's weird and naughty! (Kaichi).

In our numeracy we have been deepening our understanding of addition. We split into pairs and whilst one pair solved some calculations, the other observed, recording excellent examples of vocabulary and fed it back in a constructive session. See the attached document for examples!

In our topic we have made parachutes to highlight the effect of gravity. We  recognized that the object (parachute) was being drawn to the larger object (the Earth) through the gravity.

In P.E. we made a four step sequence; this was a huge improvement in our gymnastic skills. Also during outdoor P.E. we continued to develop our skill at using a range of passes in netball.

A super week, we hope for another.

Welcome to 6 Silver Birch. We are a class full of inquisitive thinkers, hard workers and all round wonderful people. We hope you enjoy our page!

In our literacy we have written our own invented balanced arguments. Various topics included:

  • Should everyone be allowed to own a TARDIS?
  • Should sharks be killed for safer swimming?
  • Should we allow deforestation?

Powerful stuff!!

In our numeracy we have been solving word problems (Saffron) as well as learning the formal methods for calculation (Destiny).

Continuing our learning about 'Out of this World' we have watched some intriguing songs that help us memorize facts about the universe. Also, we have added a base coat of paint to our aliens; they're going to look great!

A super week, we hope for another.

w.b. 15/09/14

Welcome to 6 Silver Birch. We are a class full of inquisitive thinkers, hard workers and all round wonderful people. We hope you enjoy our page!

In our literacy learning we have been writing a recount of our experience on planet Silver Birch. We created planet Silver Birch through every person in class sharing their ideas on a strip of paper. Our pictures led to a vast and varied landscape; watch out for the Tinbollical Creature (thanks Daniel!).

In our numeracy we have expanded our knowledge of decimals, rounding, negative numbers. As well as this we have been adding, multiplying and subtracting decimals using the standard method.

Throughout our week we have:

1) Designed our own aliens that would reside on planet Silver Birch. Some were fierce, some were friendly but all were wildly imaginative!

2) On Friday afternoon we got mucky as we used clay to bring our aliens to life. They were just as spectacular as we planned.

A fantastic week, we hope for another.

w.b. 08/09/14

Welcome to 6 Silver Birch. We are a class full of inquisitive thinkers, hard workers and all round wonderful people. We hope you enjoy our page!

Wow, what a week. So far Year 6 has been quite the adventure! We have done so many amazing things, such as:

In literacy we have been tackling an extremely contentious issue; should Daleks be allowed to live on Earth? Through a mixture of powerful discussion and exceptional writing we have explored this topic. Keep checking our page for the final decision! It could change the world as we know it...forever!

In our numeracy we have spent time exploring a range of calculation methods in our groups. It has been useful for us to focus on key areas to help us improve the depth of our mathematical knowledge.

Our topic, 'Out of this World', has given us the opportunity to explore an area which has fascinated humanity since the dawn of time. We have the tools available to understand how our galaxy works, what the planets are like and pursue our own lines of investigation about what lies beyond the stars.

A fantastic week, we hope for another.
