Year 3 Term 5 Curriculum Map and Homework Ideas
What a positive start we have had to Term 5!
Our topic is called, "Are bugs important?" and so far, we have looked in detail at the body parts of an insect, watched and recorded facts from a Steve Backshall BBC documentary and have been to our local park to bug hunt! We are looking forward to our educational visit on Tuesday the 8th May to Tyntesfield where we will explore more of the outdoors and experience a Bug Workshop!
In relation to our topic, our Talk for Writing has been a Non-Chronological Report about Ladybirds. Since learning the text, we have researched a bug of our choice then has some fun creating our own inventions! Mrs McClelland is so impressed with the quality of our work.
In Maths we have been learning all about Fractions. This has included finding fractions of shapes, equivalent fractions and ordering fractions. During the last three weeks of this term , we will be learning about time! So get practising the telling of time at home in the meantime!
As part of our Core Values, we are also learning about how we can give service to the world and each other. We also are developing our growth mindset in all areas of the curriculum; we must try not to give up when learning is challenging and find strategies to overcome this.
Swimming is happening every Friday morning until Friday 18th May. PE with Coach Kane is continuing every Thursday morning.
Please do check out our photos of our Bug Hunt!

Welcome back to 3JM Elm to Term 4!
At the end of last term we visited Bristol Zoo which many of the children expressed "it was the best trip EVER!" Check out some our photos!
Our topic this term is called "The Games that Children Play". We have started learning about toys that date back from Egyptian times to the present day and the children have been so engaged and full of discussion already!
To link with our topic, we are looking forward to having an educational visit on Tuesday 6th March from the Skip Hop Man! We are also looking forward to designing and making our own board games.
Please do read our curriculum map, have a go at some of our homework ideas and continue to learn your spellings and times tables. The Year 3 and 4 spelling list is on our class page and we will continue to assess your child on these words each week.
Happy Term 4!
Happy new year everyone! 3JM Elm are looking forward to en exciting term and start to 2018!
We have already been engrossed in our Talk 4 Writing text called "Dobber and the Silver Ring". The children went on a hunt to find the ring for themselves and we are wondering if there is more to this ring than meets the eye! We are learning the text by heart, describing and inferring Amy's character and creating a WANTED poster for the ring.
We are also enjoying our topic called, "Let's Go on an Adventure!" Using atlases, we created a giant map of South America, which located all the countries, major rivers and rainforests. We have particularly focused on the Amazon Rainforest, creating leaflets full of interesting facts which we have displayed in our Rainforest classroom.
All of Year 3 are looking forward to our Educational Visit to Bristol Zoo where we will have a Rainforest Workshop Experience!
Term 2 has been so much fun so far! Our topic is Natural Disasters and we have been learning about volcanoes, earthquakes and created some our own with salt-dough! In relation to science, we will be causing them to erupt next week!
The Freshwater Theatre company came to do a workshop with us about the volcanoes and earthquakes all over the world. Check out our photographs.
Currently, we are rehearsing for our Christmas Performance of Sulky Santa and the Boy Who Didn't Believe. We are also learning stories through Talk for Writing and publishing our own books!
Welcome to 3JY Elm's Class Page!
What a fantastic start to the academic year we have had! Miss Yeap, Mrs Gavagan, Mrs Williams and Miss Mulholland have been so impressed with our behaviour and hard work so far. We have all been really, really busy! It was a pleasure to see so many parents at our Meet the Teacher session. We hope you all found this very useful.
As we begin Year 3, here are some of the things we have been learning so far:
Vinnie says, "We have been learning about the Iron Man, reading the book by Ted Hughes and creating story maps for the first chapter. We have also made models for our hallway display."
Lexie R-M says, "We found the Iron Man's head in our school garden area! It made me feel a bit worried that Iron Man could be hurt!"
"In art, we have been learning about lines and dots in drawings inspired by Paul Klee," Bella tells us.
"We have learning maths through Place Value, using different representations. We have also been choral counting in times tables." Felix remembers.
Karrell says: We have been learning about Electricity and spotting the dangers. You should never put anything electric in water!
Last Friday, Year 3 had their first swimming lesson. It was such a joy for us to see the children's confidence and resilience in the water! Miss Yeap felt so proud!
We are looking forward to our educational visit to At-Bristol on the Tuesday 26th September, 2017, which will link very well with our Bright Sparks Topic. We will upload photos of our trip!
