Design Technology
Intent
Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
Inspire and enthuse our children to appreciate and explore products
Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
Enable our children to develop subject specific design technology vocabulary
Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
Implementation
Provide all children with opportunities to creatively and practically design, make and evaluate products for a range of purposes.
Children will learn technical knowledge and develop the skills of design, make and evaluate.
Where possible, DT units are integrated into our most befitting whole school topics offering our children a real life, meaningful context to apply their learning and skills.
Children are expected to use and apply subject specific vocabulary. Each project will build upon skills and vocabulary learnt previously
Each year group will cover three units of DT throughout the year, covering a range of textiles, food and nutrition, construction and electrical.
Children will develop their confidence and resilience to experiment with designs and reflect on the strength and weaknesses to improve their design.
A whole school progression for skills and vocabulary ensures children have opportunities to build upon previous learning and develop new skills.
