Phonics
How we teach phonics at SMRP?
At St Mary Redcliffe Primary we use Letters and Sounds to plan our high quality, systematic phonics programme. We begin teaching phonics in Nursery and children make rapid progress in their reading journey.
For a more detailed explanation of how Letters and Sounds is taught please see the documents below.
Phonics Screening
Each year, children in Year 1 will take a Phonic Screening Test to assess their phonic knowledge. This takes place in school during the month of June. Children who do not achieve the required standard in the test may need to be assessed again during Year 2.
Teachers ensure that their teaching develops pupils’ oral vocabulary as well as their ability to understand and use a variety of grammatical structures, giving particular support to pupils whose oral language skills are insufficiently developed. Phonics is delivered through highly effective ‘quality first teaching’. Teachers continually assess learning in each lesson to ensure that children are progressing through the phases. Teachers and LSAs carry out 'snappy interventions' to ensure that children do not fall behind.
