Term 1

Welcome to Year 1,

We have really enjoyed meeting all of the children and getting to know them throughout these first few days and have been delighted with the excitement and enthusiasm the children have returned with.

The children will be spending time in both classrooms where they will have the chance to learn through play and have a more structured learning opportunity.  This is to aid with the transition from Reception to Year 1.

We will be updating our class web page regularly with photos and comments about the week's learning and any important information. Click on the overview link above to check out this term’s learning!

Every week, your child will choose a book from the class library as well as a levelled book from Oxford Reading Buddy.  Please encourage your child to read at home and feel free to ask if you need any support.  Please ensure that children bring in their books and book bags every day.

PE days are Wednesday and Friday

Please can children arrive at school in their PE kits on these days and they will stay in them for the whole day. Children must wear a school jumper over their kit.

Mr Marquez-Vega will be teaching Monday to Friday in 1 Willow.  Mrs Shreeves will be teaching 1 Hawthorn on Mondays and Tuesdays with Miss Mullholland teaching, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Every Tuesday, Mrs McClelland and Mr Harvey will be teaching RE and Art in both 1 Willow and 1 Hawthorn.  LSAs in Year 1 are Miss Cornelius, Mr Harvey, Mrs Abbas and Miss Nicholls.

Thank you for your continued support

The Year 1 Team

Week Beginning 6th September

What a great start to the year!  The children have loved being back and have a lot of energy and joy though I am sure they are very tired now that it is the end of the week!

We have been so busy working on Art, Science, English, Maths and History.  It has been great going back into school assemblies and the children have loved singing assemblies in particular.

Some of the highlights have been learning new songs, do ask about the banana song, and of course starting our self portraits which will be eventually be displayed in the classroom.

Week beginning 20th September

This week we have worked hard in Science where we have been learning about our sense.  At the moment we are trying to name all five of our senses. To help us learn, we have also been listening to a song which can be found on Youtube (

We have also been working hard on our art project for Art on the Hill.  We hope you are all able to come and see our art on the day.

Week Beginning 27th September

A highlight of this week has been in science where we have continued to learn about our senses.  We linked our senses to body parts and we also used our sense of smell to identify what were in pots.  Some of the smells we like and some we did not.  The smells included onions, honey and toothpaste.

Week Beginning 4th October

It has been yet another great week with amazing learning.  We have introduced a new story book - Lubna and Pebble which has enabled us to have great discussions about what we appreciate in our lives.  We have been discussing about Rosa Parks and how inspirational she has been to many people as well.  A real highlight of the week has been dressing up and our Life Skills day where we have learned how to use our knives and forks.  Do make sure you let the children have a good go at cutting their food!

Week Beginning 11th October

We have had a great week where we have been finishing our book - Lubna and Pebble.  We have made our own pebble and written a message on the back about what makes us happy.

This week we have also had some computing days where we have become programmers. The children have loved using beebots, creating their own programs and also trying to debug them too.

Week beginning 18th October

This week we have had our final week of working with the parachute.  The children have loved using the parachute.  They have worked on following instructions, keeping calm at the right points and working as a team.  Their favourite challenge was to see how high we could get a ball in the air.  I have to say, we did a pretty good job!
