So far, this term has been incredible! We had a curriculum afternoon where the visiting grown ups and children participated in a maths relay. Team Red were the winners just by 1 point, scoring 27 points in total!
Our focus this term has been on future aspirations and Year 5 have developed some really cool business ideas that they pitched to the 'Dragons'. Now that they have succeeded in persuading the 'Dragons' for an investment in their business venture, they are currently developing their business websites.
In English, we are about to start writing our adventure stories inspired by our class book, Alex Rider: Stormbreaker. We have prepared immensely for this by learning about how to balance a story using dialogue, action and description; by learning how to use all the correct punctuation for speech; and by learning about how to use paragraphs and cohesive devices effectively.
In Science, we were investigating filtration to separate materials. We had to design and make our own filter system to clean muddy water. The winning team's filter managed to make the water appear to be clean and safe to drink. Their filter worked the best and they think this is because they used 3 layers of different materials to separate and filter the muddy water.
We have also been investigating reversible and irreversible change!
On Wednesday 28th November, we participated in a Careers Day in the Hall. We had fascinating visitors come in including: Robotics and Children's University from UWE; Ben, who is a STEM ambassador; Jack from Yellow Dog (who showed us some cool graphic designs and animation); Lydia the actress (who has a small part in an upcoming Dr. Who episode); Dr. Fletcher, astrophysicist (Ms. Fletcher); Bethan the educational psychologist; Ester, who helps people buy luxury holiday homes around the world; Beccy and Jo, our Community Police Officers. We had the most fascinating afternoon and felt very inspred by the Careers Fair.
We have done so much more, but we are running out of time to tell you about everything!
I guess it's time to look forward to the Theatre trip and Christmas!
Welcome to Term 2 in 5Lime. It has already got off to a busy, but fun start.
This term we are focusing on adventure stories in English. Our class book is: Alex Rider, Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. We are particularly focusing on developing a balance of description, dialogue and action with a story.
In Maths, we will be moving on from statistics to looking at multiplication and division. We will then begin to look at perimeter.
The whole school topic theme is: Wise Choices, Bright Futures. Year 5 are considering the question: What life skills do we need to achieve our aspirations? We would like to invite you to come in and discuss your careers with the children. They will gain loads of insight and inspiration from it!
Please note that P.E. days have changed to Tuesdays and Thursdays.
At home, it would be great if you can make sure that the children are spending quality time reading. You could ask them questions about their books and discuss the language. Also, please find time to practice the spelling words attached on this page as well as helping your child to speed up their time table facts. This will really help across many other areas of maths.
As always, if you have anything you would like to discuss, catch any one of the Year 5 team at the end of the school day, or leave a note at the gates, and we can arrange a suitable time.
Thank you for all of your hard work at home!
