Week beginning 02.11.20

For English this week we got an unexpected surprise as Miss Price came outdoors with some sparklers in her hand, dancing. We got to have some to. It was amazing. While we were doing this, we had to write down descriptive words that came to mind about the sparklers.

This week we had two days of science, on Thursday and Friday. It was all about light, shadows and opaque objects. We were asked to bring torches into school. We ranked objects from non-reflective to very reflective. On Friday we experimented with shadows by leaving our torches in different angles and seeing how the shadow reacts. We measured the height of the torch and the length of the shadow from the object. After that, we put all our measurements into line graphs in our books.

In topic this week we learnt about the Shang dynasty.  It’s a time in China where China was ruled by the Shang family. There was a thing called the hierarchy. It was a pyramid with the emperor at the top and the slaves at the bottom. There were more between like the warrior and peasant farmer.

In science this week we learnt and studied light.  We learnt stuff like light only travels in strait lines. And also how we see!

In English this week we made non-chronological reports. Which is a report on something that doesn’t need to be in an order.

Maths

In maths we learnt about long and short division which are ways of dividing.

In  RE we learnt about what a loving and a holy God.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

This week it was Anti-Bullying Week! We learnt that bullying shouldn’t happen to anyone, no matter what their religion or race. Also, we learnt that bullies usually hurt others when they feel hurt inside themselves, and want to show others how they feel. We watched a video about someone who was once a bully, but a teacher made her realise she was hurting others, now she treats everyone as if she wants to be treated, and has many friends. That video showed us all that you can turn things around, and you will always have friendship to rely on. On Friday, we wore odd socks to represent everyone being different, but the fact that they shouldn’t be bullied because of it.

In English this week we learned about conveying character in speech. To understand more, we did some drama with only speech to convey the different characters of The Firework Maker’s Daughter (the book we are reading in class). It is set in China, and the main character, Lila, wanting to be a firework maker. Her father thinks she shouldn’t be one, because she is a girl, but Lila doesn’t just give up like that. The story follows her perilous journey to the Fire Fiend, and her friend Chulak’s adventure to find her.

In maths, we have learnt about factors and common multiples. We manipulated what we already know about common multiples and factors to create new facts.

During this week we used sand and water to demonstrate constructive and destructive waves! Using different materials, we created sea defences to explore how to hold back the water to stop coastal erosion! We also learnt about the Shang Dynasty and about the gods, sacrifices, ceremonies and what life was like in China at that time.  On Friday the 4th December, we decorated the classroom with amazing snowflakes, paper chains and a massive picture of Father Christmas on our door.
