Term 4

Week 1

This week we met Anansi, who is a very cheeky character that loves to play ticks on people.

Anansi wants to collect as many stories as he can. We are going to read and write lots of stories this term and also listen to his stories.

In maths we are learning about the numbers 9 and 10. We have been thinking about what numbers add together to make 9 and 10 and will be uisng numicon and tens frames to explore this.

In phonics we are continuing to learn the phase 3 letter sounds. This term we are learning all the vowel digraphs, these are quite tricky so any practise at home will really help. Here is a list of the vowel digraphs and a link to the letters and sounds website.

ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ear, er

This week we have learnt ai, ee, igh, oa

Week 2

This week we wrote our own stories about Anansi. The children have loved listening to all the different Anansi stories and used all the ideas to write their own stories. Ask the children to tell you their Anansi story.

In Maths we have looked at comparing numbers to 10, the children have been lining up different resources to compare the different numbers. They have used language such as more, fewer and the same. We started by comparing 2 numbers and then went on to compare 3.

In phonics we learnt the letter sounds oo, ar, or and ur

Week 3

This week we have learnt the story of 'The Little Red Hen'. We have been thinking about story language and trying to use that story language in our own stories. The children have been using first, next, then and finally in their re telling of stories. The children have also been drawing story maps and writing about the story.

In maths we have been learning about number bonds to 10. We have been using lots of different resources in different contexts to find number bonds to 10. We then moved on to using numicon to make 10.

In phonics we have learnt the letter sounds ow, oi, ear and air

Week 4

This week we have followed instructions to make bread rolls. We were very pleased with how they turned out, they were quite tasty. We also looked at 'The Little Red Hen makes pizza' We thought about how the original story had been innovated to make this story. The children thought of their own characters for their own innovated story.

In maths we have been learning all about 3D shapes. The children have thought about the properties of the 3D shapes which includes the shape of the faces. We have also revised the names of the 2D shapes by playing lots of different games such as hide the shape and 5 questions.

In phonics we have learnt the letter sounds ear and er

Week 5

This week we have thought about the author Eric Carle. We have read lots of his stories and looked at his illustrations. We love the pictures in all the books. We particularly loved the story 'The artist who painted a blue horse' and made our own characters using tissue paper.

In maths we looked at pattern and copied, spotted mistakes and created our own patterns. We looked at creating more complex patters which was quite tricky.

This week in phonics we thought about the letter names of the letters and sung lots of songs.
