Week Beginning 24th May 21
The children have worked so hard again this week! In maths they finished their number work (for numbers all the way up to 100!) honing all their place value skills. In English the children retold their story of Lila and the secret of sun with an interesting twist: Lila and the secret of SUN! They wrote this throughout the week and then did some wonderful editing. In topic the children continued to compare Africa with life in Europe and finished of the topic with some beautiful African pattern art! In RE we talked about responsibilities of healing the world and created a 'Good deed a day' jar! We look forward to welcoming the children back in a week's time for Term 6!
Have a wonderful break.
Week Beginning 17th May 2021
This week we have had life skills day! For life skills we have been learning about road safety. We have written a report about how we cross roads safely and a poster about road safety. We also did a role play on how we cross roads as well as take a local walk to practice crossing roads, zebra crossing and pedestrian crossings.
We have also been editing working to improve our letters to Ralph from Lila inspired by our class text! In maths we have been continuing our place value, partitioning work on numbers up to 100. In science, we wrote the conclusion to our investigation. In RE we spoke about treating others as we would want to be treated. In Geography we continued our work on physical and human features sorting pictures of features in Bristol.

Week Beginning 10th May 2021
We had another wonderful week this week. The children have been incredibly busy writing diary entries as Lila from "Lila and the Secret of Rain". They have started learning tricky split-digraphs in phonics and how to use them (a-e, e-e, i-e and o-e)! In maths, the class enjoyed using a range of concrete resources to explore place value problems all the way up to 100!!! In Geography, we talked about human and Physical features and how to tell the difference. The children also thoroughly enjoyed exploring Victoria Park for their Science investigation into "How are plants different?". They have all been working so hard!
Maths - Place value to 100!
Week Beginning 4th May 21
Another very busy week in Hawthorn class! In English the children have been enjoying their new story "Lila and the Secret of Rain". They wrote beautifully about how Lila must be feeling and even wrote some sentences about their favourite parts of the story offering excellent reasons why! In Maths the children have been taught even more shape, space and measure this week: learning the difference between right and left. They may enjoy sharing this song with you from their lesson:
In RE, we talked about the Jewish practice of "Tzedakah" and charitable giving. In Science, the children began preparing for their investigation into "How are plants different?". In PSHE the class thought of nice ways to greet a friend and in music the children used instruments to play a four bar rhythm using crotchets, quavers and semi-quavers!
Maths - Left and Right!
Week Beginning 26th April
We have been very busy again this week! In maths the children have been applying their fabulous knowledge of fractions to rotation: learning to do quarter, half, three-quarter and full turns! In Geography the children have been learning the names of the 5 oceans - I wonder if they can remember them and tell you? If not, don't forget they can find all the learning for this term on their trusty knowledge organisers! In RE, the class have been retelling the story of 'The Good Samaritan' and how we should treat our friends and strangers!
This week we have been learning about our topic - Africa. We have talked about Africa being a continent, not a country and recapped the continents song. Do ask for a recital, if you haven't heard it already!
For geography we have been loving looking at atlases. We have had time to just look through one and spot the continents and identify Africa. We have also started to learn about the 5 oceans, do challenge us to recall it!
Welcome back to Term 5!
We hope that you have had a well-deserved break and are ready for more learning in Term 5.
Our topic this term is Africa! We will be reading stories based in Africa and learning about life in Africa. The inspiration for most of our writing this term will come from the African tale; Lila and the Secret of Rain by David Conway and Jude Daly. I wonder if you can guess which members of staff have ever lived in Africa and which country? We will also have a chance to learn about the continents and oceans of the world.
